Rockstar Games has spent 3 to 5 billion US Dollars on the development of GTA VI, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption Online, and operational costs since the year 2019.
A recent analysis by content creator Saukko505 has attempted to answer one of the biggest questions surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI: just how much has it cost to make? While early estimates placed the game’s budget between 1–2 billion US Dollars, the YouTuber’s calculations suggest a far more staggering figure of potentially between 3 to 5 billion US Dollars. However, a closer look reveals that this number doesn’t represent the actual development costs of GTA VI alone.
The content creator’s approach focuses on estimating the total operating costs of Rockstar Games from 2019 through the expected release of GTA VI on November 19, 2026. By analyzing publicly available financial data from Rockstar Games’ UK division, along with assumptions about employee salaries, office expenses, and marketing costs, they arrived at a baseline of roughly 3.4 billion US Dollars in expenditures. When adding estimates for global overhead, marketing (potentially up to 500 million US Dollars), and music licensing, the upper range climbs beyond 5 billion US Dollars.
As pointed out by Twitter/X user videotechuk_, however, the content creator’s methodology equates total company operating costs with the development budget of a single game. Rockstar Games is a large, multi-project studio, and not all of its expenses during this period can be attributed to GTA VI. For example, a portion of the workforce has continued supporting GTA Online and RDR Online, both of which require ongoing updates, maintenance, and support. During this period, Rockstar Games has worked on Red Dead Redemption remaster and likely has future titles in early development. These efforts all contribute to overall expenditure but are not directly tied to the budget of GTA VI. Furthermore, game companies also incur substantial operational costs unrelated to any single product. These include departments like HR, PR, IT infrastructure, legal teams, and physical security.
As such, it’s more accurate to interpret the 3 to 5 billion US Dollar figure as total company expenditure since 2019 rather than the development costs of GTA VI alone. The actual development budget for the upcoming title is still likely to be record-breaking, but isolating that number requires a more precise breakdown than what’s currently available.
