Rockstar Games has stated that it needs additional time to address the ongoing problem preventing owners of the digital Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption from accessing the new Xbox Series X and Series S upgrade. The company shared a direct support message with a user, acknowledging the delay and confirming that the issue remains under active investigation.
As shared on Reddit, Rockstar Support told the user, “We apologize for the continued delay of a resolution for the issue you reported. This particular issue needs some more time for our teams to diagnose.” The message continued by stating, “We understand that the lack of resolution can be frustrating and we wish there was more info to provide at this time, but rest assured the issue is still under active investigation.” Rockstar also reiterated that it would contact the user if additional details are required and concluded with, “As always, we respect and appreciate your patience. You can expect another update in five days or sooner.”
This follows an earlier statement confirming that the upgrade path for Red Dead Redemption on Xbox platforms has encountered problems. Rockstar previously said, “We are aware of an issue where Xbox players are unable to upgrade their digital Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption to the Xbox Series X|S version and are working with Microsoft to resolve it. Thank you for your patience.”
Rockstar recently launched an updated edition of Red Dead Redemption for modern platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. This enhanced version offers smoother 60 FPS performance, improved image quality, and support for resolutions up to 4K with HDR. The release includes both the original game, featuring John Marston’s hunt for his former gang, and the standalone Undead Nightmare expansion. The upgrade is offered at no cost to players who previously purchased the title digitally on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox One through backward compatibility. Save data migration is also supported across systems.
The only group still experiencing barriers is Xbox 360 digital owners, who historically relied on backward compatibility to access the game at 4K and 30 FPS on current Xbox hardware. With Rockstar confirming that the problem is related to technical issues rather than policy limitations, affected users now await the next official update. Rockstar’s promise to provide another communication within five days suggests that work is progressing, but a final resolution remains pending.
