A new rumor suggests Rockstar Games may be preparing to reintroduce text chat support across its online titles, including GTA Online, through an upcoming update to the Rockstar Games Launcher. The feature is said to function as an external overlay rather than a built-in in-game system.
The claim originates from user Tex2, who stated that a recent Rockstar Launcher update “did include references towards text chat.” According to the same source, the feature “looks like R* is trying to implement it as an external overlay that can apply to any R* game with multiplayer support, such as GTAV, RDR2, and Max Payne 3. Instead of simply adding it in-game.” Rockstar has not made any official announcement regarding the return of text chat.
The rumor surfaced alongside the latest PC update for GTA V Enhanced, which went live on April 7. Official patch notes for the update indicate that it focuses on general stability and security fixes, with no mention of chat functionality being restored.
Rockstar has continued to support the PC version of GTA V Enhanced since its release on March 4, 2025. As of April 2026, the game includes DLSS 2.9.1 with Frame Generation and VSync compatibility, as well as advanced ray-traced global illumination featuring an optional second bounce. Additional technical improvements, such as DirectStorage, have reduced loading times, while content parity with current-generation consoles has introduced features like Hao’s Special Works upgrades and Mansion Raid missions.
At this stage, the potential return of text chat remains speculative, though the idea of a unified overlay spanning multiple Rockstar titles suggests a broader approach to online communication systems.
