Prime Video has officially cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos in its upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War, a major step forward for the long awaited television series based on PlayStation’s flagship franchise. The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Hurst brings prior experience with the franchise to the role, having previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök. His performance in the game earned a BAFTA Award nomination, giving him an established connection to the series world and its characters. The casting positions Hurst as the live-action embodiment of one of gaming’s most recognizable protagonists.

The Prime Video series will closely follow the narrative introduced in the most recent God of War games, focusing on Kratos’ life as both a god and a father. Once a Spartan warrior who struck a disastrous bargain with the Greek god Ares, Kratos has spent years defined by violence, loss, and survival. In the series, his story centers on his relationship with his ten year old son, Atreus, as the two set out to fulfill a final wish tied to the death of Kratos’ wife, Faye. The evolving bond between father and son is described as the emotional core of the adaptation.

God of War has already received a two-season order, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver and casting in progress for additional roles. The project is being led by Ronald D. Moore, who serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Moore is joined by an extensive production team that includes Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon as executive producers, with Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serving as co-executive producers.

The first two episodes will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy Award-winning director known for his work on Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout. His involvement signals a high production ambition for the series as it transitions one of PlayStation’s most cinematic properties into live action.

With a two-season commitment already in place and a lead actor now confirmed, Prime Video’s God of War adaptation is moving steadily toward production, aiming to bring the mythological journey of Kratos and Atreus to a new audience while staying grounded in the emotional themes that defined the modern games.
