Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Brings PSSR and TSR Toggle to PS5 Pro, Matches PC Visual Fidelity

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is making its PlayStation 5 debut with a noteworthy addition — a toggle between PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) on the PS5 Pro. This makes it one of the first Microsoft/Xbox-published titles to offer players a choice between two advanced upscaling methods on Sony’s platform. According to a recent comparison, the PS5 Pro version holds up remarkably well against the PC release, even when paired against high-end hardware.

The PlayStation 5 version features two performance modes. Quality Mode runs at a dynamic resolution of 2560x1080p, typically between 1080p and 720p, and is upscaled to 3840x1606p at 30 frames per second. Performance Mode targets 60fps, with resolutions dipping as low as 635p before being upscaled to the same 3840x1606p target. The PS5 Pro improves on these figures, keeping a more consistent 1080p base in both modes, with Performance Mode occasionally dropping to 720p but still delivering a smooth 60fps experience.

The PC version, running on maximum settings with an RTX 5090 Super, i9-12900K, 64GB of DDR5 RAM, and SSD storage, naturally offers the most uncompromising presentation. However, the graphical differences between it and the PS5 Pro version are less pronounced than expected. Most disparities come down to rendering resolution rather than major setting changes.

The inclusion of the PSSR and TSR toggle is particularly significant. TSR delivers slightly sharper overall detail, while PSSR excels at edge smoothing, reducing visual artifacts in fast-paced scenes. Both methods perform similarly in terms of frame rate, allowing players to prioritize either sharpness or smoother anti-aliasing based on preference.

Originally released on May 21, 2024, for Windows and Xbox Series X/S, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is set in 9th-century Iceland and continues the story of Senua from the acclaimed 2017 title. The PS5 version launches on August 12, 2025, alongside an “Enhanced” update for all platforms, which will add higher-framerate options, new gameplay modes, and improvements to the game’s robust photo mode.
