Sonic Frontiers is an upcoming 3D platformer developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. After Sonic, Miles “Tails” Prower, and Amy Rose separate when falling through a wormhole, the player takes on the role of Sonic the Hedgehog and explores the enigmatic Starfall Islands in order to gather the Chaos Emeralds. The series’ first open world, where players solve puzzles to gather items, battle robot enemies, and incorporate platforming and classic Sonic elements like rings and grind rails.

Following the release of Sonic Forces, development of Sonic Frontiers began in 2017. Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, wanted Sonic Frontiers to establish a new standard for future Sonic games. The Sonic Team decided on an open-ended design and concentrated on adapting Sonic’s abilities to an open world setting. Sonic Frontiers will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 8, 2022.

Sonic retains his abilities from previous Sonic the Hedgehog games, including his ability to run at high speeds, collect rings, grind on rails, and zero in on enemies to attack. The player can double jump, sidestep using their gamepad’s shoulder buttons, and boost with the right trigger if they have enough energy in the tank. Combat attacks, running alongside walls, and using the Cyloop to create a circle of light around objects and interact with them are some of the new abilities. Players can upgrade Sonic’s speed, attacks, defense, and ring capacity as well as customize Sonic’s controls with respect to turning, acceleration, and resistance.
