Sega has announced major post-launch support for Sonic Racing: Cross-World, confirming that players can expect a steady stream of free content for an entire year after release. In a recent Famitsu interview (via) with Ken Kobayakawa and Ryuichi Taki, it was revealed that the game will introduce a new character and kart each month at no additional cost, adding up to twelve free updates over the course of the year.
The developers noted that the roster expansions will not be limited to Sonic franchise characters but will also feature crossovers from across Sega’s wider catalog. Among the confirmed additions are Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga, and Joker, each arriving as part of the monthly updates rather than being available from launch. The team also confirmed that online events and further unannounced updates are in the works, ensuring that players will have reasons to return long after release.
When asked about potential course expansions, the developers clarified that there are currently no plans to include new tracks through a paid season pass, though they did not rule out the possibility for the future. The interviewer expressed personal hopes to see more Sega and Atlus characters join the growing roster, hinting that the developers may still have surprises planned.
Sonic Racing: Cross-World is being developed by Sonic Team with contributions from the Initial D Arcade development team. The game’s standout feature is its CrossWorld mechanic, which allows racers to transition seamlessly between tracks mid-race, offering a fresh take on kart racing. Multiple guest characters from Sega’s various IPs are expected to appear through post-launch content.
The title is set to launch on September 25, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for release at a later date.
