Sonic Racing Crossworlds Switch 2 Port Improves Performance and Resolution but Makes Noticeable Visual Cutbacks

by Ali Haider

A recent Digital Foundry podcast has provided new insight into how Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds performs on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to the original Switch, outlining a meaningful technical upgrade that still comes with clear compromises.

The analysis focused on where the Switch 2 version fits between last generation and current generation console releases. Current generation systems were described as running the game at “60 fps with like the full visual feature set,” while last generation hardware operates at “30 fps with poor frame pacing” and several features removed. The original Switch version was characterized more critically as having “pretty degraded visual features and at 30 fps with very poor frame pacing,” which was summarized bluntly as “not very good at all.”

Against that baseline, the Switch 2 version represents a noticeable step forward. According to Digital Foundry, “it looks a lot like Switch 1, but at 60 fps and at higher resolutions,” a change framed as “pretty good” and beneficial in both performance and clarity. While the visual feature set is still closer to Switch 1 than to home consoles, the higher frame rate alone marks a substantial improvement.

Some visual sacrifices remain. It was noted that several post-processing effects are missing, with one speaker stating that “a lot of those visual features are still missing. Primarily post processing, um, SSR,” alongside bloom and other effects. However, this reduction produced an unexpected advantage, as “Switch 2 perhaps correspondingly looks clearer and sharper than Series S,” creating what was described as “an interesting division.”

Resolution estimates reinforced this point. The discussion suggested that “Switch 1 appears to be about 720p,” while “Series S is about 1080p and Switch 2 is around 1440p, maybe a little bit below 1440p.” This was highlighted as “a pretty big resolution bump over Switch 1” and even higher than Series S in some cases.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched on September 25, 2025, for multiple platforms, with a native Switch 2 edition following on December 4, 2025.
