Sony Interactive Entertainment and Firewalk Studios’ canceled multiplayer first-person hero shooter, Concord, is still being updated on Steam.
According to the data available on the Steam Database, despite being canceled, Concord continues to be updated to this day, suggesting that it may resurface sometime in the near future, possibly as a Free To Play game. The most recent update was performed yesterday on October 10, 2024.
Despite its cancellation a mere two weeks after launch, Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Firewalk Studios don’t appear to be done with Concord, and it may just make its return, possibly as a rebranded Free To Play title. The company may be looking to salvage whatever it can out of the rumored investment of around 400 million US Dollars on the project. This figure was revealed during a recent episode of the Sacred Symbols podcast by host Colin Moriarty. He mentioned that an individual who worked on Concord reached out to him and shared this information with him. The hero shooter had entered alpha state in the first quarter of 2023. This was before Sony had acquired developer Firewalk Studios. Up until that point, the studio had already spend around 200 million US Dollars on the game. It’s unclear how much of this money is from Sony.
Moriarty mentioned that from the point of Concord being in alpha state up until its launch, Sony had spent an additional 200 million US Dollars on the game, bringing the total investment to 400 million. According to his source, the game was in a “laughable” state when it was in alpha, which is why Sony felt the need to make the investment in order to get it to minimum viability. A major expense was having to outsource the game to other studios to finish building the game. Two fundamental areas, namely on-boarding and monetization, were not worked on at all.
