Sony Group Corp. has confirmed that it will shut down Bluepoint Games, the PlayStation subsidiary known for developing remakes such as Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The Austin-based studio will officially close in March 2026, following what the company described as a recent business review.
According to a PlayStation spokesperson, the decision will impact roughly 70 employees. In a statement addressing the closure, the spokesperson said, “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftmanship.”
Founded in 2006, Bluepoint Games built a reputation for producing high-end remakes of legacy titles, including Uncharted and Shadow of the Colossus for modern platforms. Sony acquired the studio in 2021 shortly after the release of Demon’s Souls on PlayStation 5, later assigning it co-development responsibilities on God of War Ragnarok in 2022.
Following its work on that project, Bluepoint reportedly began development on a live service God of War title, which was canceled in January 2025. At the time, PlayStation indicated that it would work with Bluepoint to determine the studio’s next project.
In an internal message, Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group, acknowledged broader industry challenges tied to the decision. He stated that “rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.” Hulst confirmed that, as a result of this evaluation process, “we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March.”
He added, “This decision was not made lightly. Bluepoint is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. I want to thank everyone at Bluepoint for their creativity, craftsmanship, and commitment to quality.”
Sony noted that it will seek opportunities for some affected employees within its global network of studios where possible. The company also stated that it remains focused on its future roadmap, emphasizing continued efforts around creativity, innovation, and long-term development priorities across PlayStation Studios.
