Sony Confirms Upgraded PSSR Upscaler for PS5 Pro, Resident Evil Requiem First to Use It

Sony has announced that an upgraded version of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology is set to roll out globally for PS5 Pro users in the coming weeks. The enhanced upscaler will debut in Resident Evil Requiem, which launches today as the first game to implement the new version of PSSR.

PSSR, an AI-driven upscaling solution designed specifically for PS5 Pro, analyzes game visuals on a pixel-by-pixel basis to improve effective resolution while maintaining performance. According to Sony, the technology has already been used to enhance more than 50 titles on the platform. The newly updated version introduces significant changes to both the neural network and the overall algorithm powering the system.

Mark Cerny, Lead Architect of PS5 and PS5 Pro, stated that the revised PSSR takes a fundamentally different approach compared to the original implementation. The updated model builds on work conducted through Project Amethyst, a collaboration with AMD. Sony noted that AMD FSR 4 technology on PC reflects similar advancements, and the PS5 Pro version incorporates the jointly developed techniques along with an additional six months of refinement tailored to the console.

Capcom provided insight into how the improved PSSR benefits Resident Evil Requiem. Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager in Capcom Engine Development Support Section, explained that the game focuses heavily on detailed character rendering, including individually modeled hair strands that react to movement and wind. Lighting behavior changes dynamically depending on how strands overlap, creating complex texture interactions that are traditionally difficult to upscale cleanly. According to Ijuin, the upgraded PSSR processes these intricate visual elements more effectively, helping preserve image clarity while sustaining frame rate performance.

Sony confirmed that additional titles will adopt the improved PSSR in March. A system software update scheduled for next month will introduce a new option labeled Enhance PSSR Image Quality within PS5 Pro settings. When enabled, compatible PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR will utilize the enhanced upscaling model. Sony indicated that players may notice sharper image quality in supported titles once the update becomes available.

Further details on upcoming game updates are expected in March as the rollout continues.
