Sony Has Allegedly Not Decided To Delay The PS6 Amid RAM Shortages

Sony Interactive Entertainment has not decided to delay its next-gen console, the PS6, amid RAM shortages, as per a new rumor.

In his new video, content creator and hardware insider Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID) addressed recent rumors regarding a delay in the launch of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s next-gen console, the PS6, due to global RAM shortages. According to him, no such decision has actually been made. He noted that the discussion gained traction after a report attributed to industry insider Tom Henderson, which itself didn’t confirm any delay. Instead, it highlighted concerns within Sony and Microsoft regarding memory supply constraints that are currently shared across much of the tech industry.

As MLID put it, “Everyone is worried about RAM shortages right now,” noting that such discussions are inevitable for any company producing hardware that relies heavily on memory. However, he added, “The decision has not been made to delay any consoles. Sony has not had a meeting where they said, ‘We’re delaying the PS6.’ Nope. Has not happened.”

According to the hardware insider, Sony and AMD already have contracts with TSMC to manufacture PlayStation 6 hardware, specifically the AMD APUs, around mid-2027, and those plans remain unchanged. He stressed that APU manufacturing and RAM selection are separate decisions. In other words, the console maker can proceed with chip production while leaving memory configuration choices open until much later in the process.

MLID suggested that Sony will likely wait until closer to late 2026 to evaluate RAM market conditions before finalizing specs. At that point, the company can assess whether prices have stabilized enough to comfortably choose between options such as 24GB, 36GB, or higher memory configurations. He referenced the PlayStation 4 as an example, recalling how Sony’s decision to double its RAM from 4GB to 8GB came relatively late in development.

Only if conditions significantly worsen, MLID argued, would a delay even be considered. In that scenario, Sony may understandably push the PS6 launch into early 2028. For now, though, both Sony and Microsoft are simply monitoring the situation. According to the insider, the industry is still at least a year away from making any firm calls, making current speculation premature.
