Sony Releases Surprise PS3 System Software Update 4.92

by Ali Haider

Sony has unexpectedly rolled out a new system software update for the PlayStation 3, despite the console being long retired. PS3 system software update version 4.92 was released on March 5, 2025, and primarily focuses on system performance improvements without introducing any notable new features.

The update requires at least 200MB of free space, either on the PS3’s hard drive for direct installation or on removable storage for those updating via PC. Sony recommends keeping the system software up to date to maintain security and functionality. Notably, the update also renews the Blu-ray player encryption key, ensuring continued playback support for Blu-ray discs.

While the PlayStation 3 has been considered a legacy console since the release of the PlayStation 4 in 2013, it remains a significant part of gaming history. Launched in 2006, the PS3 introduced groundbreaking technology at the time, including Blu-ray disc support, an HDMI port, and the ability to output in 1080p resolution. It initially struggled due to its high launch price and complex architecture but later gained traction, selling over 87 million units worldwide before being discontinued in 2017.

Although Sony has largely shifted focus to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, occasional updates for the PS3 continue to surface. These updates typically address security concerns or system stability rather than introducing new functionalities.

PlayStation 3 owners who wish to keep their system updated can download the latest firmware now.
