Sony has introduced new system software updates for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, continuing its steady rollout of firmware improvements. The PS4 update, version 13.00, is now live, bringing minor usability adjustments, while the PS5 has received a more substantial upgrade with added features and energy-saving options.
For PS4 owners, update 13.00 focuses primarily on refining the user experience. According to the patch notes, the release improves messages and overall usability on certain screens. While not as sweeping as earlier feature-heavy updates, it fits the recent pattern of Sony delivering stability adjustments and smaller enhancements for its long-running system. Previous firmware versions, such as 12.52 and 12.02, also concentrated on security fixes, while others like 12.50 and 12.00 offered similar usability improvements. Earlier updates in the 11.xx range had included performance boosts and even some new functions, such as the ability to sign into PS4 using the PlayStation App by scanning a QR code, a feature reminiscent of what is available on PS5.

In contrast, the new PS5 update, version 25.06-12.00.00, introduces a notable addition. Chief among the changes is a power saver mode designed to help reduce energy consumption during gameplay. The feature can be managed via the settings menu, specifically under System and Power Saving. Once enabled, players can turn the option on or off for individual games. Titles running in this mode will display an icon in the Switcher menu within the console’s control center, offering a clear way to see which games are operating with reduced power consumption.
These updates highlight Sony’s ongoing effort to refine both consoles in different ways. The PS4, still widely used despite its age, continues to receive support through smaller adjustments and maintenance-focused patches. Meanwhile, the PS5 is benefiting from broader feature additions that aim to enhance everyday use. With both updates rolling out simultaneously, players across both platforms can expect smoother functionality and, in the case of PS5 owners, a step toward a more energy-conscious gaming experience.
