Sony Interactive Entertainment is planning to end PS Plus tiers in favor of an all-in-one subscription plan as part of a major upcoming PSN overhaul, according to a new report.
Game analyst William R. Aguilar took to Twitter/X to claim that that Sony Interactive Entertainment is planning major changes for its online ecosystem, including the end of the existing PS Plus subscription tiers. According to him, the company is exploring a unified, all-in-one subscription model as part of a broader overhaul of the PlayStation Network.
Aguilar’s claims are based on an alleged internal email leak that give “confirmation of a transition that internal teams and analysts have known about since 2023.” This transition appears to build on changes introduced in 2022, when PlayStation Plus was reorganized into its current Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. These tiers expanded the service by introducing the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, giving subscribers access to a wider library of titles depending on their subscription level.
According to the game analyst, a detailed internal document circulated in 2023 outlined the performance of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s online services and future plans. While he refrained from sharing the full document due to its “SECRET” classification, he noted that recent leaks and misinformation prompted him to disclose a relevant portion. The documents revealed plans to create “One Subscription Service combining and giving you access to Sony/PlayStation Games, Movies, Shows, & Music.” This unified approach will allegedly integrate services like Sony Pictures Core, which already offers a selection of films bundled with PlayStation Plus, and may even incorporate the anime catalog from Crunchyroll.
Aguilar suggested that Sony Interactive Entertainment may formally outline these plans during its upcoming Business Segment Meeting in Spring (May/June), though the transition may also align with the launch of the next-generation console, the PlayStation 6.
The report also hinted at how this ecosystem might function across devices. While an accompanying app may allow users to stream movies, shows, music, and anime on phones or PCs. He speculated that access to subscription-based game streaming may either require verification through a PlayStation console or be opened more broadly via cloud infrastructure.
