“In the gaming business, we are moving away from a hardware-centric business model more to a platform business that expands the community and increases engagement”, said Hayakawa, According to him, Sony Group is making a global shift to “creation” as a company, as the segments of games, music and pictures make up 60% of its total revenue.

For example, he talked about shifting from output devices such as TVs to creation devices such as digital cameras. Furthermore, he brought up services like music streaming, music catalogs, Crunchyroll and teaming up with Bandai Namco Entertainment in order to create new content and IP. As far as the gaming business is concerned, he noted that the shift towards a platform based business has been increasing. As per him, Sony Group is transitioning to entertainment creation on order to expand and to improve the company’s stability and profitability.

Signs of this shift in Sony’s strategy first became visible when PlayStation first-party exclusive titles started becoming available for PC. More recently, a job listing suggested that the company was further strengthening its multiplatform ambitions. The hiring was for a Senior Director of Multiplatform and Account Management, a role designed to lead the commercial strategy of PlayStation titles across platforms such as Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile. According to the job description, the Senior Director will report directly to the Vice President of Commercial Management and will be responsible for shaping and executing a global commercial roadmap that extends PlayStation Studios titles beyond the confines of the company’s hardware.
