Furthermore, the developers were asked about the vision for South of Midnight from a gameplay perspective. Roy responded by saying that the game is a modern folktale, so the development team at Compulsion Games knew what kind of framing it wanted. The studio envisioned a short main story with an estimated length of 10 to 12 hours.

According to Roy, the narrative in South of Midnight has a lot of momentum. He mentioned that the game’s protagonist, Hazel, goes on a journey in pursuit of her mother Lacey, who got swept away by a hurricane. As such, he explained that there’s a lot of momentum and urgency to the story, as Hazel needs to keep going forward and figure out a way to reach her mother.

On top of framing the narrative, the development team had the idea of Hazel utilizing objects that she finds along the way. She has a staff, spindle, and hooks to use during gameplay. Since it’s a folktale, the studio decided to make magic a part of the experience. The team also came up with the idea of  magical strands, a magical fabric that you can pull on.  It started experimenting with the idea of moving objects and being able to go about interacting with the world by using the fabric.

South of Midnight is set for release on April 8, 2025, for or Windows and Xbox Series X|S.
