Compulsion Games, the developer behind action-adventure game South of Midnight, is currently working on a “fascinating and intriguing” new IP.
In a new post on LinkedIn, South of Midnight developer Compulsion Games has shared that it is currently hiring staff to work on a “fascinating, intriguing, brand new IP.” The required roles include Lead Gameplay Programmer, Engine Programmer, Gameplay Programmer, Senior Level Designer, and Senior Character Artist. The post invites candidates to work alongside the “same, wonderful group of people to work with.”
The studio’s previous title, South of Midnight, earned a spot in our Best Of 2025 Xbox Games list through its sheer atmosphere and thematic ambition. Our staff lauded Compulsion Games for crafted a haunting, magical realist tale inspired by Southern Gothic folklore, tackling grief, memory, and marginalized voices with sincerity. While we found its combat systems to be simple and sometimes repetitive, the game’s art direction, stop-motion-inspired animation, and exceptional musical score work well to elevate the experience. Hazel’s journey through the swamps of Mississippi is less about mechanical mastery and more about emotional resonance.
For the uninitiated, Compulsion Games was founded in 2009 in Montreal by Guillaume Provost, a former developer at Arkane Studios. In its early years, the studio supported itself by contributing to external projects such as Darksiders, Dungeon & Dragons: Daggerdale, and Arthur Christmas: Elf Run while working toward its own original titles. The company’s debut game, Contrast, launched in November 2013 for multiple platforms and achieved commercial success, selling over one million copies within a few months. Building on that foundation, the studio announced We Happy Few in 2015, a project that quickly gained attention after its debut, with comparisons to BioShock. After an Early Access period and delays for refinement, the game was officially released in 2018, the same year Microsoft acquired the studio, integrating it into Xbox Game Studios. Following post-launch support, Compulsion Games expanded its team and began work on a new project, eventually revealing South of Midnight in 2023.
