Square Enix to Add AI Companion to Dragon Quest X Using Google Gemini

by Salal Awan

Square Enix is planning to integrate Google’s generative AI model Gemini into Dragon Quest X, introducing a new in-game companion designed to assist and interact with players. The feature was revealed alongside broader updates for the long-running MMORPG.

The AI-powered companion, called Oshaberi Slimey or Chatty Slimey, is designed to communicate with players using generated text and voice responses. According to details shared by Genki_JPN, the character will be capable of recognizing on screen activity and reacting dynamically. This includes commenting on outfit changes, acknowledging when players defeat strong enemies, and reacting to the discovery of rare items.

In addition to reactive dialogue, the companion will also provide gameplay assistance. Players will be able to ask for hints, with the AI offering guidance on progression, including suggestions on where to go next. The feature is expected to begin rollout as part of a trial phase starting in late April 2026.

The announcement comes as Square Enix prepares to launch Dragon Quest X Online Version 8.0, titled Stray Children of Space and Time, on June 25, 2026, in Japan. The expansion introduces a new story arc focused on interdimensional travel and will be released on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. An All In One Package covering Versions 1 through 8 will also be made available on the same date.

Dragon Quest X remains exclusive to Japan, and no plans for a Western release were mentioned alongside the AI feature announcement.
