Square Enix to Release New Version of Final Fantasy VII on Steam

by Greg Martin

Square Enix has announced plans to release a new version of Final Fantasy VII on Steam, bringing changes to how the classic RPG is listed and distributed on Valve’s storefront. Following the launch of the new release, the current PC version will be rebranded as Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition.

Once the new version becomes available, Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition will no longer be sold on the Steam Store. However, players who already own the 2013 Edition will retain full access to it in their library. At the same time, the newly released version will appear on Steam simply as Final Fantasy VII.

Square Enix confirmed that existing owners of the 2013 Edition will automatically be entitled to the new version at no additional cost. After release, both versions will coexist in the Steam library for eligible players, allowing them to choose which edition they wish to install and play.

The publisher also clarified that save data will not be compatible between the two versions. Save files created in the 2013 Edition will only function with that version, and save files created in the new release will only work with the new version.

No additional details were provided regarding differences between the two versions or a specific release date for the new Steam edition.
