Star Wars: KOTOR Remake Is Reportedly Being Developed By Mad Head Games

The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is being developed by Mad Head Games, according to a new report.

In his latest newsletter, Game File’s Stephen Totilo shared that Mad Head Games, in collaboration with Saber Interactive, is now developing the Star Wars: KOTOR remake.

Totilo’s investigative report originates from a lawsuit filed against Aspyr, the studio responsible for the 2022 Nintendo Switch port of KOTOR II. Fans were promised an official version of the beloved fan-made TSL Restored Content Mod (TSLRCM), only for the DLC to be quietly cancelled after internal approvals fell apart. As Totilo documents, emails, Slack logs, and depositions reveal months of genuine attempts by Aspyr, the modders, and Lucasfilm Games to bring the DLC to life. But a legal roadblock, triggered by Disney’s concerns about crediting volunteer modders, ultimately killed the project.

The filings also contain insights into Knights of the Old Republic’s status. Buried among production notes, sales data, and redacted internal correspondence was a reference to “Project Juliet,” described as a full, modern remake of KOTOR II. It is mentioned alongside earlier reports of a KOTOR remake originally headed by Aspyr before transitioning to Saber Interactive.

According to Mad Head Games’ official website, the studio is currently working on an “unannounced AAA game based on a famous and beloved IP.” Totilo’s report fits this description, and it looks like the studio is now developing the KOTOR remake alongside Saber Interactive. Neither Disney nor Embracer Group has formally announced anything in this regard, however.

The Knights of the Old Republic series holds a long standing reputation built on its branching narrative structure and its focus on player driven choices. Both mainline titles have remained relevant due to ongoing ports and their narrative connection to later material within the Old Republic setting.
