Bethesda has shared new details on upcoming Starfield content, outlining both a major free update and a new story expansion scheduled to arrive in April. The additions build on the game’s ongoing post-launch support, introducing new systems, locations, and narrative elements shaped in part by player feedback.
The centerpiece of the free update, titled Free Lanes, focuses on expanding interplanetary travel. It introduces a cruise mode that allows players to move between planets at high speeds without interruption, while still being able to walk around their ship, interact with crew, and manage interiors. Travel is no longer passive either, as dynamic encounters can occur mid-journey, ranging from combat situations to unusual discoveries in space.
Customization receives a notable push through the addition of X Tech, a new resource tied to ship and weapon upgrades. This system enables higher tiers of equipment and new effects, alongside expanded options such as weapon skins, ship modules, and performance tools. Outposts have also been reworked, now supporting furnished modules, shared storage across locations, and a database system designed to simplify resource management. Smaller additions, including collectible items with passive bonuses and companion creatures, round out these changes.
Progression systems are also being adjusted. A new quantum entanglement device allows players to carry selected inventory through the Unity, addressing a long-standing limitation. Quantum essence, earned through gameplay, can now be used to enhance abilities, adding another layer to character development.
The update further introduces new locations, companions, vehicles, and enemy behaviors. Anchor Point serves as a hub for fresh quests, while vehicles like the Moon Jumper are designed for traversal in low-gravity environments. Enemy encounters have been expanded with unique traits that require more varied strategies. Players can also invest in high-end properties, including a mansion carved into an asteroid.
Alongside the free update, Bethesda is preparing the Terran Armada expansion, which introduces a new faction emerging as a major threat. The group, formed after separating from the Settled Systems during the Colony War, positions itself as the true inheritor of Earth. Players will investigate their motives while attempting to prevent large-scale attacks, facing mechanized enemies and advanced spacecraft equipped with a more grounded arsenal.
A new incursion system forms part of the expansion, offering mission types that range from narrative-driven objectives to resource-focused encounters. These incursions can disrupt travel by blocking grav jumps, forcing players to locate and disable jamming points before continuing their journey.
Additional content for the Trackers Alliance is also being released immediately, bringing new targets and storylines accessible through the Creations menu.
Both the Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada expansion are set to launch in April. The same release window will also see Starfield arrive on PlayStation 5, marking its debut on the platform and expanding its reach to a new audience.
