Starfield PS5 vs Xbox vs PC Comparison Highlights Performance Gaps and Visual Parity

by Salal Awan

A new technical comparison of Starfield across PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC highlights both the similarities and key performance differences between platforms following the game’s recent PS5 release.

The analysis notes that Starfield offers two display modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X, while the PS5 Pro includes three options. For testing purposes, the PS5 Pro’s Enhanced mode was used, while the PC version was run at max settings in 4K as a reference point. Across all platforms, visual consistency remains largely intact, with only minor variations depending on the selected mode.

Performance differences are more apparent. The Xbox Series X reportedly runs at a lower average resolution compared to the PS5 in Performance mode, but manages to outperform it by around 5 to 10 frames per second in certain scenarios. Terrain detail also sees slight reductions in Performance mode across consoles, marking one of the more noticeable visual trade-offs.

On the technology side, the PS5 Pro relies on PSSR across all modes, while the standard PS5 uses FSR. The Enhanced mode on PS5 Pro shows only minimal gains over Quality mode, with slight improvements observed in shadows and ambient occlusion rather than a substantial visual leap.

Despite these variations, all platforms face similar limitations tied to the game’s CPU demands. The comparison indicates that none of the tested systems can consistently maintain 60fps in densely populated areas or environments with a high number of assets and NPCs.

Starfield launched on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026, following its original 2023 release on PC and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 version arrived alongside the Free Lanes update, which introduced new features such as Cruise Mode for interplanetary travel, the Moon Jumper vehicle, and expanded progression systems, as well as the Terran Armada expansion.
