Super Mario Bros Movie Sequel Title Leaks Ahead of Nintendo Direct

by Salal Awan

Just a day before the upcoming Nintendo Direct, it appears the title of the Super Mario Bros. sequel has surfaced online. Domain registrations spotted on September 10 indicate that the second film in Nintendo and Illumination’s successful animated franchise will be called Super Mario Galaxy.

The domains, SuperMarioGalaxy-LaPelicula.com and SuperMarioGalaxy-LeFilm.com, were registered by NBCUniversal and are currently linked to the company’s servers. Both redirect to Universal Pictures’ official websites in Spanish and French, further pointing to their legitimacy. Records from services such as DNS Coffee and WHOIS also show NBCUniversal as the registrant, strongly suggesting this is indeed the title chosen for the sequel.

Earlier speculation had pointed toward Super Mario World as the film’s name, but these latest findings appear to set the record straight. While the official reveal has yet to happen, the timing of the registrations just before a Nintendo Direct presentation raises the likelihood that confirmation will arrive during the show.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in April 2023 and became an unprecedented box-office success. Despite mixed reviews, it grossed over 1.36 billion dollars worldwide, setting records as the highest-grossing video game adaptation and the top-earning Illumination film to date. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a screenplay from Matthew Fogel, the movie featured a star-studded cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black.

The sequel, scheduled to release on April 3, 2026, will once again be directed by Horvath and Jelenic, with Fogel returning to write the screenplay. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri are producing. While plot details remain closely guarded, the post-credits tease from the first movie suggested Yoshi will play a significant role, and new characters from the Mario universe are expected to join.

With the likely title of Super Mario Galaxy, it seems the sequel will expand the universe in ambitious ways, drawing inspiration from one of the most beloved entries in Nintendo’s long-running franchise. Fans will not have to wait long for confirmation, as the official announcement is expected during the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
