Nintendo and Illumination have released the first official trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, confirming several key details that had been rumored in earlier leaks, including the casting of Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. The animated follow-up to the record-breaking 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie is set for a worldwide release on April 3, 2026, and promises to take the series to space.

The new trailer gives a fantastic look at the film’s cosmic setting, moving the Mushroom Kingdom story into deep space. As the footage shows, a mysterious star crash-lands in the kingdom, starting a series of events that sends Mario, Luigi, and Peach on a mission beyond their world. Bowser Jr., now looking for revenge after his father’s defeat, emerges as the main villain, determined to throw the galaxy into chaos. The film’s mood appears to mix humor and emotional depth with visually rich, high-energy scenes that remind viewers of the Super Mario Galaxy games on Wii and Switch.

Brie Larson’s introduction as Rosalina is one of the trailer’s biggest moments. Her character, the celestial guardian of the cosmos, looks like she will be both a mentor and ally to Mario’s team. Initial fan reactions to Larson’s casting have been quite positive, with viewers praising her calm yet powerful presence in the short scenes shown. Meanwhile, Benny Safdie’s lively take on Bowser Jr. offers a mischievous and unpredictable contrast to Jack Black’s memorable turn as Bowser in the first movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues the partnership between Nintendo and Illumination, directed again by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who return after the first film’s success, which made over $1.3 billion globally. The returning cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. The sequel’s expanded world introduces new planets, cosmic creatures, and familiar power-ups, all brought to life using Illumination’s distinct animation style.
