Super Mario Odyssey Upgraded on Switch 2, Here’s How It Stacks Up to the Original

by Ali Haider

Nintendo has quietly rolled out a free update for Super Mario Odyssey, introducing significant technical improvements when played on the Nintendo Switch 2. This update offers a notable boost in visual fidelity and performance, bringing the fan-favorite platformer closer to modern graphical standards.

Originally released for the first-generation Switch, Super Mario Odyssey operated at 900p resolution in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode, both targeting 60 frames per second. The newly enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch 2 now runs at a much higher resolution—upscaled 4K (2160p) from a native 1440p in docked mode—while maintaining a stable 60 FPS. In handheld mode, the game now targets 1080p at 60 FPS, offering a clearer and smoother experience across the board.

Beyond resolution and frame rate, several visual settings have been improved. Shadow resolution has been enhanced, and anisotropic filtering has seen upgrades. However, technical analysis notes that some shadows now present slightly more visible jagged edges, which might be a side effect of the updated rendering pipeline. Performance-wise, areas that previously struggled to maintain consistent frame pacing now run without dips, and loading times have also been marginally reduced on the Switch 2.

These improvements are part of a broader initiative by Nintendo to update legacy Switch titles for compatibility and optimization on the new hardware. Nintendo has confirmed support for numerous games, each receiving performance and visual enhancements to take advantage of the upgraded processing capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Among the notable games receiving Switch 2 updates are:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, both of which now run more smoothly and feature minor issue resolutions.
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, both upgraded with HDR support and improved visuals.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Echoes of Wisdom, and ARMS, all of which now support HDR and feature enhanced image quality.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which received an unexpected but welcome update improving its performance on the new system.
  • Game Builder Garage, which now includes enhanced visual quality and new control options using Joy-Con 2 peripherals.
  • A long list of additional titles including Kirby Star Allies, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, and Super Mario 3D All Stars have received gameplay and performance adjustments.

Nintendo Switch 2 was released on June 5, 2025. It is available to purchase worldwide for $449.99 for the standalone console and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle.
