Bandai Namco Entertainment has released Super Robot Wars Y, the latest entry in its long-running tactical role-playing series, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The game became available worldwide on August 28, 2025, marking the first new installment in the franchise since Super Robot Wars 30 in 2021.
Developed by Bandai Namco Forge Digitals Inc., Super Robot Wars Y continues the tradition of uniting characters and mechs from multiple anime series within a grid-based, turn-based combat system. The franchise, which debuted more than 30 years ago, is known for its crossover storylines and elaborate battle animations. This new installment introduces an original narrative centered on the Guardians of Steel, who confront an impending global crisis.
The release also introduces a new gameplay mechanic, the Assist Link system. According to Bandai Namco, this feature allows selected characters to join battles as support units. The system enables actions such as health recovery, energy restoration, and temporary attack boosts. Support characters can also gain experience points, unlocking or enhancing abilities over time.
As in previous entries, players can upgrade and customize units and pilots, while navigating a storyline that blends settings and characters from various mecha anime. The publisher emphasized that the game offers both strategic depth through battlefield management and accessibility for fans familiar with the series.
The Super Robot Wars series has historically drawn on material from several licensed anime properties, though Bandai Namco has not yet disclosed the complete lineup of featured series for Super Robot Wars Y. The title is available in multiple digital editions across all platforms, though no physical editions were confirmed in the publisher’s announcement.
The franchise has cultivated a dedicated following, particularly in Japan, but recent entries have also reached international audiences through digital distribution. With the release of Super Robot Wars Y, Bandai Namco continues efforts to expand the reach of the series to a broader global market.
