Superman Breaks Monday Record for July Superhero Films, Eyes $169 Million First-Week Total

by Salal Awan

Superman continues its impressive box office performance, securing a strong hold on the domestic market with a record-setting Monday for a superhero film released in July. The film grossed $12.9 million on its first Monday, following a $125 million weekend debut. This brings its four-day domestic total to $137.9 million, positioning it for a potential $169 million in total by the end of its first week in theaters.

The Monday gross represents a 59 percent drop from its Sunday earnings, a trend consistent with other major superhero films released during the summer season. For context, this drop mirrors the 58 percent Monday decline of Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, another high-profile superhero reboot launched in early July.

In comparison to previous July superhero releases, Superman now holds the fifth-highest Monday total following an opening weekend. The film’s $12.9 million trails behind notable blockbusters such as Spider-Man 2 ($27.7 million), The Dark Knight ($24.5 million), Deadpool & Wolverine ($24.4 million), and The Dark Knight Rises ($19.4 million), but edges out Thor: Love and Thunder and Spider-Man: Homecoming, both of which posted $12.2 million.

Superman‘s opening weekend exceeded expectations with a final tally of $125 million in domestic earnings, broken down as follows:

  • Friday: $56.1 million (including pre-shows)
  • Saturday: $37.6 million (down 33 percent)
  • Sunday: $31.3 million (down 17 percent)

Globally, the film has already amassed $233 million, with $138 million from the United States and Canada and an additional $95 million from international markets. This performance places it ahead of Man of Steel in terms of opening figures, signaling a promising future for the newly launched DC Universe.

Directed and written by James Gunn, Superman marks the first installment in DC Studios’ new narrative slate, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, supported by Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and others. The story follows Superman as he struggles to affirm his role as humanity’s protector while facing a calculated smear campaign led by Lex Luthor.

Looking ahead, DC Studios is preparing to release Supergirl on June 26, 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the film will explore Supergirl’s galaxy-spanning quest for vengeance. Initially conceived under the DCEU, Supergirl underwent a creative overhaul following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership of DC Studios. Filming wrapped earlier this year in the United Kingdom and Scotland.

With Superman exceeding projections and holding strong in its first week, DC Studios appears to have established a firm foundation for its new cinematic universe, creating momentum for upcoming entries in the franchise.
