Superman Outperforms Studio Projections with Strong Second Weekend, Joins Elite Ranks of DC’s Most Enduring Box Office Hits

by Salal Awan

Superman continues its box office momentum, exceeding studio forecasts and solidifying its position among the most enduring DC films of the modern era. Warner Bros. has confirmed that the film posted a revised second weekend gross of 58.5 million dollars in the United States, slightly higher than earlier projections. This marks a 53.2 percent decline from its opening weekend, a notably strong hold in the contemporary superhero market.

With this performance, Superman joins a select group of DC titles, including The Dark Knight, The Batman, and Wonder Woman, recognized for achieving steady second-weekend holds. The film’s domestic cumulative gross now stands at 236.3 million dollars, officially surpassing Captain America: Brave New World to become the highest-grossing comic book movie of 2025 in North America. Furthermore, it now ranks as the sixth highest-grossing film of the year after only ten days in theaters.

In terms of DC’s all-time second weekend records, Superman now stands fifth, trailing only The Dark Knight (75.2 million), The Batman (66.5 million), The Dark Knight Rises (62.1 million), and Wonder Woman (58.5 million). It has also achieved the biggest second weekend ever for any film featuring Superman, overtaking Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which managed 51.3 million despite a significantly larger opening.

The film’s Sunday figures have proven particularly impressive, ending at 18.9 million dollars — nearly 1.5 million above Warner Bros.’ original estimates. This represents an 18 percent drop from Saturday’s gross and a 40 percent decline from the previous Sunday. This consistent performance places Superman among the strongest Sunday holds for July superhero films, ranking alongside major hits like The Dark Knight and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Looking ahead, industry analysts now project Superman to conclude its domestic run between 370 and 405 million dollars. If these figures hold, the film will further cement its standing as a key success story of the year and a major achievement for DC Studios under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

However, the film’s international reception remains mixed. As previously reported, director James Gunn acknowledged that while Superman has seen robust success in the United States and select markets such as the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Brazil, its performance in Asia, particularly China, has been underwhelming. China recorded a steep 93.9 percent drop in the film’s second weekend, effectively removing it from the country’s top ten box office rankings.

Despite these challenges, Superman has maintained solid earnings across Europe, Latin America, and Australia. Its global cumulative total stands at over 406 million dollars, positioning it among the highest-grossing films worldwide this year. The film has also performed strongly in premium formats, securing over 51 million dollars from IMAX screenings alone.

Released on July 11, 2025, Superman serves as the inaugural chapter of DC Studios’ new cinematic slate, “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” Directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, the film offers a refreshed take on the iconic character as he faces public distrust following his intervention in a global conflict orchestrated by Lex Luthor.

While its future performance will be tested by the impending release of The Fantastic Four, Superman has, for now, reaffirmed its place as a major force in the box office landscape. The film’s combination of strong word of mouth, steady domestic turnout, and a loyal fanbase has laid a solid foundation for DC Studios’ long-term vision.
