Tekken X Street Fighter Fans Get Their Hopes Up Again, Only to Be Let Down

Tekken X Street Fighter represents one of the most anticipated rivalries in the world of fighting games. Although a collaboration was once in the works, it never came to fruition.

During the recent Evo 2023 tournament, Katsuhiro Harada, the game’s producer, was present to make some announcements. He surprised the audience by bringing a guest to the stage: Yoshinori Ono, the former producer for the Street Fighter series up until Street Fighter 5.

At the end of their conversation, Ono playfully mentioned Tekken X Street Fighter. He teased that he and Harada had “some homework to do” and was on the verge of revealing the game’s name when Harada humorously escorted him off the stage.

While it was evident that this was merely a jest between the producers and longtime friends of both major fighting game franchises, it reignited fans’ hopes for a possible revival of the project.

The Tekken series continues to enjoy popularity, with the last mainline entry, Tekken 7, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. Street Fighter 5 stumbled at launch but managed to recover through subsequent updates. Its successor, Street Fighter 6, has been a massive success, shipping over 2 million copies in just over a month since its launch.

When Harada brought Ono on stage, many fans were hopeful that TxSF would be resurrected. Unfortunately, this did not happen, and the last major update seemed to confirm that the project has been shelved for the foreseeable future. Only 30% of the project was completed.

The collaboration’s history dates back to 2010 when Ono and Harada announced that both studios would develop a game featuring a crossover of their franchises. Capcom successfully released Street Fighter X Tekken, while Bandai Namco was slated to create TxSF. However, after the failure of Street Fighter X Tekken, these plans were indefinitely put on hold.
