The Bad Guys 2 Sets Record with Fastest PVOD and Streaming Release Date

by Salal Awan

DreamWorks Animation has officially announced the at-home release plan for The Bad Guys 2, marking one of the studio’s fastest transitions from theaters to digital platforms. The animated heist comedy will be available on PVOD and streaming starting August 19, only a little over two weeks after its theatrical debut. A Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and DVD release will follow on October 7.

The announcement was made through DreamWorks’ official social media account, which shared that the film would arrive with exclusive extras, including a bonus short titled Little Lies and Alibis. This quick turnaround is notable given that animated features often remain in theaters for longer runs before shifting to digital formats.

At the box office, The Bad Guys 2 has generated approximately 117 million dollars worldwide, with 57.2 million from domestic markets and 60.7 million internationally. Opening with 21.9 million dollars, the film has displayed a domestic run-to-opening ratio of 2.60, shorter than its predecessor’s performance. By comparison, the first Bad Guys film from 2022 amassed over 250 million globally with a longer theatrical presence and stronger legs, though it also benefitted from a more traditional release cycle.

Directed by Pierre Perifel and co-directed by JP Sans, the sequel brings back Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Zazie Beetz, and other returning cast members. New additions include Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, and Maria Bakalova. The story follows the titular crew, forced out of retirement to team up with an all-female squad for one last high-stakes heist.

Although its worldwide gross has not matched the original’s 250 million box office run, The Bad Guys 2 has already exceeded its 80 million dollar production budget. With critical reception leaning positive and strong home release plans in place, the film seems positioned to extend its reach with a second wave of audience engagement across digital and physical platforms.
