Warner Bros has another horror hit on its hands as The Conjuring: Last Rites stormed past projections to earn an astonishing 187 million dollars worldwide during its opening weekend. With a production budget of 55 million dollars, the film has already proven itself to be one of the most profitable and record-breaking releases of the year.

Domestically, the film opened to 83 million dollars, marking the eleventh biggest three-day debut ever for an R-rated release. This performance surpasses Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and sets a new franchise record, eclipsing The Nun’s 53.8 million debut. It also stands as the largest opening weekend of the year for both horror and R-rated films, outpacing Final Destination: Bloodlines. On the international front, Last Rites generated 104 million dollars across 66 markets, giving it the highest overseas debut ever for a horror movie.

Together, the domestic and international results secured a 187 million dollar global start, narrowly edging out It Chapter Two’s 185 million while coming close to the 189.7 million global launch of 2017’s It. This performance positions the film as the second biggest horror opening of all time at the worldwide box office, only behind It.

The release also set several additional records. It achieved the fourth biggest September debut in history, placing just under Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, while also becoming the second largest post-pandemic horror release, trailing only Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Ranking third for the biggest domestic horror openings of all time, Last Rites demonstrates the continued box office strength of the genre even in a crowded release calendar.

As the ninth entry in The Conjuring Universe, Last Rites continues the saga inspired by the real-life investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Directed by Michael Chaves and written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the film stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles alongside Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy. Released in the United States on September 5, 2025, the film has already cemented its place in franchise history.

Since its debut in 2013, The Conjuring series has grown into the most successful horror franchise ever, collectively grossing nearly 2.5 billion dollars. With Last Rites adding to that legacy, Warner Bros has also become the first studio in history to secure seven consecutive openings above 40 million dollars.

The overwhelming success of The Conjuring: Last Rites shows that the appetite for supernatural horror remains strong and, if early numbers are any indication, the film may well continue its momentum in the weeks ahead.
