The Fantastic Four: First Steps Arrives on Digital September 23 Following $518 Million Box Office Run

Marvel Studios has confirmed that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released digitally and on video-on-demand platforms on September 23. The announcement comes nearly two months after the superhero team’s latest adventure debuted in theaters worldwide on July 25.

Directed by Matt Shakman, the film serves as the second reboot of the Fantastic Four within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and marks the franchise’s highest-grossing entry to date. Featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as Marvel’s first family, the retro-futuristic story is set in the 1960s and pits the team against the cosmic threat of Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson.

At the box office, The Fantastic Four: First Steps delivered a strong performance, reaching $272.5 million domestically and an additional $246.2 million internationally. Its worldwide total of $518.7 million ranks it as the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2025. Despite a steep drop in attendance during later weeks—earning $1.4 million in its eighth weekend—it remains the most commercially successful adaptation of Marvel’s first family.

The project has been long in the making, with development first beginning under 20th Century Fox before Disney’s acquisition of the studio in 2019. Marvel Studios formally announced the reboot later that year, cycling through directors and writers until Shakman and screenwriters Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer finalized the film. The production avoided retelling the team’s origin story, instead focusing on their established role within a stylized 1960s setting.

Premiering in Los Angeles on July 21, 2025, the film received broadly positive reviews from critics who praised its ensemble cast, stylized world-building, and departure from previous adaptations. Its success has already paved the way for a sequel, which is currently in development at Marvel Studios as part of the MCU’s Phase Six roadmap.

With its digital release now confirmed, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is poised to reach an even wider audience while continuing to build momentum for Marvel’s long-term plans for the iconic superhero team.
