Embark Studios’ free-to-play first-person shooter, The Finals, is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and if you’re on the fence about which version to pick up and play, read ahead.
The game offers a single graphics mode across all consoles. While the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are identical, the Xbox Series S version of The Finals sees some cutbacks in foliage detail, shadow quality and geometry draw distances.
In terms of resolution, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of The Finals run at a dynamic resolution that ranges from 1440p to 4K (2160p). Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S version also operates at a dynamic resolution that ranges from 720p to 1512p.
With regards to performance, all three console versions of the Finals target a frame rate of 60 fps. While all three versions are able to mostly maintain the target frame rate, the Xbox Series X version comes out on top with the most stable performance overall, followed by the PS5, and then Xbox Series S. Drops into the 50s on PS5, and even more so on Xbox Series S, don’t revert back to 60 fps as quickly as they do on Xbox Series X. Such drops are rare, but they generally happen when there is a dramatic shift in GPU load, such as instances with plenty of destruction.
All in all, regardless of which version one picks, The Finals delivers a worthwhile experience. Though, given the option, it’s the Xbox Series X version that delivers relatively stable performance, more closely adhering to the 60 fps target in GPU intensive moments.
The Finals features team-based matches on destructible maps, encouraging strategic use of the dynamic environment. The game involves participants engaging in a televised virtual combat game show. Holographic crowds and commentary from hosts are incorporated into the experience. Embark Studios has acknowledged that the game takes inspiration from the likes of The Hunger Games and Gladiator (2000).
