A multiplayer mod is currently in development for the PC version of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.
Modder and content creator Speclizer_ took to Twitter/X to share a brief glimpse at a multiplayer mod they’ve been working on for the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Responding to a question regarding the possibility of different modes in the final build, they clarified that if the mod is to be completed, it will only feature PvP and no PvE, as involving NPCs “makes things a lot harder.”

While it’s understandable that the modder only wants to focus on a PvP mod and possibly deliver an experience similar to the Factions mode from the original The Last of Us, the No Return mode added to the sequel’s remastered version would have been a good fit for a PvE mod. Perhaps someone else will build on the foundation of the work done by Speclizer_ and create one. For now, we’re excited about the prospects of potentially seeing the unofficial return of Factions multiplayer.
The aforementioned No Return mode available in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is a roguelike survival mode that allows players to test their skills across runs of randomized encounters. It features procedurally generated combat encounters set in recognizable locations from the game, including areas such as Jackson and the Channel 13 News Station. While the environments are familiar, each encounter feels different due to varied gameplay elements, including multiple playable characters with distinct strengths, unpredictable modifiers, and unique interactive objects. Deaths are permanent, and failing a run results in the loss of all collected weapons, items, and upgrades, requiring players to start over with a new sequence of randomized encounters.
