In a rather unexpected turn of events, Respawn Entertainment has added a mysterious new game mode to its 2016 first-person shooter, Titanfall 2.
The mysterious new game mode for Titanfall 2 is titled “???”, with the accompanied description, “Your rockets will blot out the sun”. For those unaware, this is a reference to a dialogue from the movie 300. Furthermore, there are hints that a sequel may be getting announced in the near future.
Additionally, the game recently received its first major update in years, which included fixes to matchmaking and servers, making the game stable and fully playable again, placing the private matches out of beta after 8 years, changing geometry on some maps, fixing glitches and out of bound exploits, adding Little Nessie plushies with hammers in places as an Easter egg/signature, adding new weapons for the 1v1 Colloseum game mode, and adding new and returning game modes in a rotating playlist, which has been receiving regular updates since then.
More recently, the latest Apex Legends patch notes made mention of a “Nessie Transmission” with 3 codes that have since been decrypted. The codes are references to the release dates of Titanfall 1, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends. The seventh anniversary of Titanfall 2 will be on October 26, 2023, and will roughly coincide with the end of the current Apex Legends season on October 31, 2023. This cryptic hint, alongside the addition of a mysterious new game mode, recent update, and Nessie Easter egg, suggests that EA and Respawn may have some sort of an announcement planned next month, possibly for a potential Titanfall 3.
For the uninitiated, Titanfall 2 is the sequel to 2014’s Titanfall. It was released worldwide on October 28, 2016, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Players control Titans, which are mecha-style exoskeletons, along with their agile pilot counterparts equipped with various skills like wall-running and cloaking. The game is set in a science fiction universe, and its single-player campaign focuses on the story of Jack Cooper, a Frontier Militia rifleman who forms a bond with his mentor’s Titan, BT-7274, after his mentor’s death. Together, they embark on a mission to prevent the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) from deploying a super-weapon that threatens to destroy the Militia planet Harmony.
