Todd Howard Discusses Future of Fallout and Ongoing Projects

by Salal Awan

Todd Howard has shared new details regarding the future of Fallout during a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, addressing Fallout 76, ongoing support efforts, potential new projects, and his perspective on remakes. His remarks highlight Bethesda Game Studios’ continued investment in the franchise while maintaining its core identity.

Reflecting on the launch and recovery of Fallout 76, Howard described the project as one of the studio’s most challenging undertakings. “It was incredibly difficult to launch and it did not launch great. It was even harder to pull it out of that. In many respects, it is the game I am the most proud of because it was so hard to do and then maintain as a relevant game. If you look across the industry, there have been many games like it that have come and gone, and here is 76 still there with big numbers and doing well and being relevant.”

Howard emphasized that support for Fallout remains active and substantial. “We just want people to recognize how much work we are doing on Fallout that we are putting out many times a year. We are really proud of it and there is a great audience there.” The studio’s commitment to delivering regular updates appears central to its strategy for sustaining player engagement.

On the subject of future projects within the franchise, Howard confirmed that additional work is underway, though no specifics were provided. “We are working on stuff. There is a time to announce that and talk about it, but we have a lot of irons in the fire right now.” While brief, the statement suggests multiple initiatives are in development behind the scenes.

Howard also addressed the topic of remasters and legacy titles, referencing Oblivion as a guiding example. “I am still sort of anti remake. I respect the other ones out there, but I think part of the age of a game is part of its personality and what it represented when it came out. With Oblivion, I definitely wanted it to be a remaster, but the absolute best version of that you can imagine. Let the original game run the way it did, just patched and refined, and graphically make it look modern while keeping the original style intact.” His stance reflects a preference for preservation and refinement rather than full reinterpretation.

Regarding Fallout as a television property, Howard discussed how the series integrates with the broader universe. “When you say there is a new Fallout, the first question is where is it set. We treat the show that way. Each season, where is it set. Season three is going to take us on a journey to some new places you have never seen in the Fallout universe, while still going back to Vegas and other key locations.”

Across Fallout and Bethesda’s other major franchises, Howard reiterated a focus on sustained support, technological advancement, and preserving the defining qualities that made each series successful in the first place.
