Todd Howard Teases Upcoming Starfield Content and Long Term Support Plans

Todd Howard has confirmed that Bethesda Game Studios is preparing to reveal new Starfield content, with details expected in the near future. Speaking during a discussion with Kinda Funny Games, Howard stated that the studio has been actively developing additional material for the science fiction role-playing title but has yet to formally present it. He explained that the latter part of last year was focused on other franchises, particularly Fallout, which dominated the fall and early part of this year.

“We have been working on a lot of Starfield content. We have not talked about it yet because the end of last year was a period where we focused on certain franchises. Fallout really dominated the fall and early this year. We are going to be talking about it really soon. We are moving into a phase where we are ready to talk about Starfield and really show that in the right way and what is coming to the game,” Howard said.

Howard clarified that the upcoming changes should not be viewed as a complete reinvention. “It is not Starfield 2.0. I have seen some of that. For expectation setting, if you love Starfield, we think you are going to love this. It is updates and things that change the game, not in an isolated way but in a broader sense, using outer space and things in ways that we have not.” He added that players who did not initially connect with the game may not find the new content transformative. “If Starfield is something that did not connect with you right away or you bounced off it or found it boring in places, I do not think this is going to change that fundamentally. But if you are someone who loves Starfield, we are really happy with it. It is a Game Pass beast for us.”

Regarding long-term support, Howard indicated that Bethesda plans to continue expanding the title. “We are doing more Starfield stuff coming up. We have been laying that out and it is something we see continuing for a while. We also have all the creators doing amazing stuff in the game. Working with them keeps really good content coming into the game, and we are going to be a part of that as well.”

Addressing criticism around exploration, Howard acknowledged player feedback. “That is a good criticism. When you look at the criticisms of Starfield, the way you explore in that game, given the nature of what it is, is just tricky. It is harder. You are going to land on ice balls. Outer space is big. I think we did a lot of good things, but the nature of that problem is really hard.” He noted that procedural elements are being refined. “We have some things in the new update that make that procedural aspect better, but I do not think it changes the nature of the exploration per se.”

Starfield, developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios, originally launched on September 6, 2023, for Xbox Series X and S and Windows PC. Set within the Settled Systems, the game follows a member of Constellation searching for mysterious artifacts across more than 1,000 celestial bodies. Since release, it has received a major expansion titled Shattered Space in September 2024 and a substantial performance update in February 2026.
