Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake

by Ali Haider

Ubisoft has officially canceled the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake as part of a broader internal restructuring. The decision affects multiple projects across the company, including several titles that had not yet been publicly announced, and marks a significant shift in Ubisoft’s near term development plans.

The news was first reported by journalist Jason Schreier, who stated, “BREAKING: Ubisoft is canceling the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake and 5 other games (4 unannounced, 1 mobile). The company says it is also delaying 7 games (including an unannounced project believed to be a Black Flag remake) as part of a larger restructuring.” Schreier’s report indicates that the cancellations and delays are part of a coordinated effort to realign the publisher’s portfolio and production priorities.

In a follow-up post, Schreier addressed recent speculation surrounding the status of the remake. “For the last few weeks, rumors have been circulating that Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was completed and would be released on January 16. In reality, Ubisoft was not happy with the state of the game and decided to cancel it as part of a massive reorganization,” he wrote. These comments directly contradict earlier claims that the project was close to release following the appearance of an ESRB rating.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was first announced in 2020 as a full reimagining of the 2003 action-adventure classic. Development initially took place at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai before the project was transferred to Ubisoft Montréal, a move intended to reset production and improve quality. Despite the studio change and years of continued development, the remake never received a revised release window.

Ubisoft leadership chose to cancel the project outright rather than continue development. The remake is one of six canceled titles, alongside four unannounced games and one mobile project. At the same time, the company has delayed seven additional games, including an unannounced project widely believed to be a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.

The cancellation is part of a wider corporate restructure that includes closing two subsidiary studios and narrowing the company’s strategic focus. Ubisoft leadership has stated that future investments will prioritize open-world adventures and live service games, leading to the removal of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake from the publisher’s active production pipeline.

As a result of the decision, the remake no longer has a release date and is no longer planned for launch in any form. For fans who have followed the project since its announcement, the cancellation brings a long and uncertain development cycle to a definitive end.
