Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio’s unannounced God of War spin-off may be an action RPG.

Known leaker Ashhong took to the Reset Era forums to respond the recent discovery of the LinkedIn profile of Santa Monica Studio’s senior writer indicating that the developer is working on a new franchise set within the God of War universe. Amid speculation regarding the game’s genre, he clarified, “Yall it’s not a CRPG. Let’s be real.” When pointed out by a fellow member that he “didn’t say not an RPG”, the insider reacted with the “👀” emoji.

Make of this what you will, but going by the leaker’s earlier post from October, 2025, in which he claimed that God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog is “making an action game”, it appears that Santa Monica Studio’s unannounced spin-off is an action RPG.

Furthemore, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier made a brief appearance in the same Reset Era thread, confirming that the new God of War franchise mentioned in the senior writer’s LinkedIn post is in fact what he had previously hinted at in an earlier post. He said, “I suppose now it’s become obvious what I meant by ‘not a new IP but it might feel like one.'”

According to the LinkedIn profile of the senior writer, they “Helped shape narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe, developing characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed IP.” The description stops short of naming the project or providing concrete details. It further notes collaboration across disciplines to integrate story with gameplay and worldbuilding, while contributing to long term narrative and franchise strategy. The individual worked at Sony Interactive Entertainment from August, 2020, to September, 2025. Their listed responsibilities include franchise storytelling, narrative strategy, and creative development across global intellectual property.
