Sony has begun rolling out a new PlayStation 5 system software update that introduces broader support for an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR. The update enhances the AI-driven upscaling technology used on PS5 Pro, improving image stability, clarity in fine details, and overall visual consistency in supported games.
PSSR works by analyzing each frame on a pixel-by-pixel basis before reconstructing the image at a higher resolution. With the latest revision, Sony says the technology delivers more accurate image reconstruction and improved motion stability. Developers also gain additional flexibility when balancing visual quality and performance on PS5 Pro hardware.
Several studios have already confirmed support for the upgraded system in their titles. Konami revealed that both Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f will receive improvements through the updated technology. According to the Silent Hill f production team, the enhanced version allows environmental details such as grass movement and shadow rendering to appear sharper and more stable, further enhancing the atmosphere of the game’s fog-covered 1960s Japan setting.
The update is also being integrated into a variety of other games across different genres. BioWare has added support for the new PSSR in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, reporting noticeable improvements to image quality while maintaining stable frame rates in both performance and fidelity modes.
Remedy Entertainment is applying the technology to both Control and Alan Wake 2. The studio highlighted improved upscaling stability and clearer motion during gameplay, particularly in visually demanding scenes. Ninja Theory has also adopted the upgraded system for Senua’s Saga Hellblade II, noting improvements to particle effects and visual clarity that help preserve the studio’s intended presentation.
Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will benefit from the new version of PSSR as well. According to the development team, the upgrade restores fine details such as character hair more naturally while reducing flickering and visual artifacts.
Koei Tecmo is implementing the updated technology in Nioh 3 and Rise of the Ronin, where it sharpens environmental elements such as vegetation and terrain while maintaining visual clarity during fast-paced combat sequences. Capcom has also adopted the enhanced PSSR in several titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Additional games are set to support the upgraded system in the near future. Crimson Desert will launch with the technology on March 19, while Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 are expected to receive patches enabling the feature in the coming weeks.
The system software update began rolling out on March 16 at 10 PM Pacific Time and will gradually become available to PS5 users worldwide. Players can also manually check for the update through the console’s system settings. Sony noted that PS5 Pro owners can optionally enable the enhanced PSSR for existing supported games, which may provide improvements in image clarity and stability depending on the title.
According to Sony, the updated algorithm and neural network behind the new PSSR were developed through the company’s Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. The collaboration is expected to influence future advancements in image upscaling technology, including upcoming updates to AMD’s FSR solution.
