Valve Corporation has delisted the Steam title known as PirateFi over concerns regarding its suspected use of malware.

A survival game titled PirateFi was released on Steam last week by developer Seaworth Interactive. It was later discovered that its game files contained malware, prompting Valve to take immediate action and delist the game from the digital store. Those who ended up installing and playing PirateFi were sent out an email, which can be seen below.

In its email, Steam Support informed users that the Steam account of PirateFi developer Seaworth Interactive had uploaded builds to the digital distribution platform that contained suspected malware. As the contacted users had played the game while its aforementioned builds were active, it’s likely that these malicious files were launched on their computer.

As per Valve, the builds containing the suspected malware have now been removed from Steam, but the company strongly encourages affected users to run a full-system scan using an anti-virus product that they trust or use regularly, and inspect their system for unexpected or newly installed software. Steam Support also suggested that a full reformat of the operating system may be worth considering by those who played PirateFi in order to ensure that no malicious software remains on their machine.

Prior to Valve taking action, those who had purchased and played PirateFi on Steam informed potential buyers about its game files containing a virus by posting negative reviews. Meawhile, other users praised the game, giving it positive reviews, while being unaware of the potential threat that it posed. Some negative reviews also complained about the buggy state of the survival game.

Valve will undoubtedly be looking to take steps in order to ensure that such malwares don’t find their way on Steam in future.
