As the summer winds down, HBO Max is delivering an extensive August 2025 lineup packed with fresh originals, high-profile movies, compelling documentaries, and a busy slate of live sports coverage. With returning series, debuts, and special programming rolling out across genres, subscribers have a varied selection to explore throughout the month.
Original Programming and Specials
One of this month’s highlights is the return of Peacemaker, premiering its second season on August 21. The season promises a deeper look into the psyche of the offbeat antihero, exploring an alternate world and confronting unresolved trauma. New episodes will premiere weekly every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET.
Comedian Marc Maron delivers his second HBO special, Marc Maron: Panicked, arriving August 1. According to the official logline, the special sees Maron offering “his nuanced perspective on our increasingly uncertain world.”
Other original programming includes Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Buffalo Bills, premiering August 5, and the true crime docuseries The Yogurt Shop Murders, launching August 3. These titles, alongside other HBO documentaries and CNN Originals, continue the network’s commitment to real-world storytelling.
New and Upcoming Films
HBO Max’s film catalog receives a significant boost this month. Freaky Tales, releasing August 8, offers an ensemble-driven thriller set in 1987 Oakland. A week later, on August 15, The Legend of Ochi, an A24 fantasy drama, introduces a new world of mystical creatures and emotional storytelling.
A horror entry, Final Destination: Bloodlines, is coming on August 1. The film follows a college student seeking to break a deadly curse tied to her family’s fate.
In addition to new releases, classic titles including Alien: Covenant, Gremlins 2, Pride and Prejudice (1940), and The Peanut Butter Falcon become available starting August 1.
Documentaries and Nonfiction
For those seeking true crime or investigative narratives, August’s offerings are substantial. The Yogurt Shop Murders, a four-part docuseries, delves into the infamous 1991 Texas case and examines issues of memory and media influence. The Case Against Diddy and The Idaho Murders, both airing under The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, also explore high-profile criminal investigations.
On the sports front, Hard Knocks provides behind-the-scenes access to the Buffalo Bills’ preseason camp, spotlighting star quarterback Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott.
Live Sports in August
HBO Max continues to expand its live sports offerings this month. Baseball fans can watch the Cincinnati Reds face the Chicago Cubs on August 5, with more MLB matchups scheduled later in the month.
NASCAR fans will be treated to multiple races and qualifying events, including the Cook Out 400 (August 16) and the Coke Zero Sugar 400 (August 23). AEW Wrestling returns with weekly broadcasts of Dynamite and Collision, with a special retrospective on Kenny Omega scheduled for August 29.
Additionally, college football makes its seasonal debut with the Big 12’s Hawaii vs Arizona matchup airing August 30 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

August also features several Max Originals and imported programming. Notable arrivals include The Prince: Season 2 (Turkey), The Heritage: Season 1, and the Max Original anime Iyanu on August 31.
