Nintendo is set to add Wii, DS, and Sega CD classic games to its Switch Online service, according to a new rumor.
The Xbox Era’s Shpeshal Nick took to Twitter/X to respond to a post discussing an official support page for a Switch 2 Wii remote, and the implication that an announcement regarding Wii games coming to Nintendo Switch Online may happen during the next Direct presentation. In his response, he shared a screenshot of an earlier Discord conversation he had with Universo Nintendo’s Necrolipe, in which he mentioned hearing from sources that the console maker will be bringing DS classics to Switch Online with the aid of an extra screen.
Furthermore, Nick also said that Nintendo will add Wii classics to Switch Online alongside a new Wii remote that doesn’t require a sensor bar. The aforementioned support page for a Switch 2 Wii remote is said to be a “placeholder”.
Both Nick and Necrolipe mentioned hearing about Sega CD classics also coming to Nintendo Switch Online, though they’re unaware how soon the new library of titles will be available on the service.
A few months prior, Nintendo filed a patent that indicated that it will be bringing DS titles to Nintendo Switch Online. The patent revealed how dual screen setup of the handheld will be managed on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. According to the patent, there are three methods in which Nintendo DS can work on NSO for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2: 1) By having a dual screen arrangement similar to that of the DS, with a parent screen and a child screen; 2) a single screen mode with both DS screens displayed via Picture in Picture; and 3) a Switch mode, where the user can alternate between both screens. The first method appears to be in line with what Nick has suggested.
