Yakuza Kiwami 3 Officially Announced by Sega

Sega has officially announced Yakuza Kiwami 3, a remake of the third mainline entry in the Like a Dragon series. The project is being developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind previous entries, and will feature new scenes, reworked gameplay systems, and modern updates aimed at revitalizing the 2009 classic.

The Kiwami subtitle, which has become synonymous with full remakes in the franchise, has previously been used for Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2. This marks the first time that Yakuza 3 is being fully remade from the ground up rather than remastered. Alongside this project, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is also working on a brand-new IP, Stranger Than Heaven, for Sega, further expanding their portfolio beyond the Like a Dragon series.

Originally released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Yakuza 3 followed Kazuma Kiryu as he attempted to leave behind his criminal past while managing an orphanage in Okinawa, only to be pulled back into conflict. The title later received a remaster in 2019 that restored previously cut content and brought the game to modern platforms, including PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One.

With Yakuza Kiwami 3, Sega appears ready to give fans a definitive version of the game, bringing its story, combat, and presentation up to the same standard as recent entries in the series. More details are expected to follow.
