Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida has hinted that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the long-running MMORPG may be under consideration. The comment was shared as part of a New Year’s message reported by the Japanese blog LiveDoor, immediately drawing attention from fans eager to see the game expand to additional platforms.
According to LiveDoor, Yoshida was asked directly whether a Nintendo Switch version of Final Fantasy XIV could be released. In response, he stated, “Regarding the Switch, please look forward to it with anticipation.” While brief, the remark stands out due to Square Enix’s historically cautious approach to discussing new platforms for its flagship online title. No specific confirmation or timeframe was provided, but the wording suggests that the possibility is not being dismissed.
The comment arrives as Final Fantasy XIV continues to maintain a strong presence across its current platforms. The game is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The Xbox version launched in early 2024, marking a major expansion of the game’s platform reach after years of PlayStation exclusivity on consoles. A potential Switch 2 port would represent another significant step in broadening accessibility.
Final Fantasy XIV is currently operating in what Square Enix has described as its post-Hydaelyn era. The fifth major expansion, Dawntrail, launched on July 2, 2024, and introduced the continent of Tural as a new setting. Since then, ongoing patch updates have continued to advance the game’s narrative and endgame content, keeping the player base engaged well beyond the expansion’s release window.
At present, the community is focused on Patch 7.4, titled Into the Mist, which is delivering the conclusion of the Arcadion raid series. At the same time, Square Enix has announced a 2026 Fan Festival tour, with events planned in Anaheim, Berlin, and Tokyo. These events are expected to serve as the primary stage for revealing details about the game’s next major expansion, often referred to as Expansion 8.0.
