Zootopia 2 has made a remarkable debut in modern box office history, shattering multiple records in China and earning over half a billion dollars globally. The animated sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios generated an impressive $271.8 million in its first five days in China, surpassing every Hollywood release in the market since the pandemic and even exceeding the total earnings of Avatar: The Way of Water. This outstanding performance places the film among the top ten highest-grossing Hollywood titles of all time in China, ranking seventh within its opening week.
The scale of Zootopia 2’s debut in China is remarkable across nearly every category. It now holds the record for the biggest single day ever recorded for a Hollywood film in China, the strongest weekend for any imported film, and the second largest Sunday in any global market, following only Endgame’s historic domestic performance. The film had nearly 380,000 screenings on Sunday alone, with admissions reaching figures comparable to the highest-selling days in the market’s history. Its total for the five-day opening weekend accounts for 49 percent of its global box office, highlighting the crucial role that China played in the film’s initial success.
The film has made an impressive international debut, earning a total of $556 million worldwide, which ranks it fourth among the largest openings of all time and sets a new record for animated films. In North America, the film generated $156 million during the extended Thanksgiving weekend, making it the second-largest Thanksgiving opening in domestic box office history. Additional earnings from overseas markets totaled $128.8 million, bringing the film’s overall performance just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home in terms of top Hollywood openings since the pandemic.
Zootopia 2 continues the adventures of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they uncover a new conspiracy involving the city’s first reptile resident, Gary De Snake. Early reviews have praised the film for its visual quality and thematic depth, contributing to its remarkable global audience. With its opening box office already nearing the $600M mark, the film is set to surpass one billion dollars worldwide in the coming days, marking another significant milestone for Disney’s animation portfolio.
