The AMD Magnus Zen 6 SoC will lay the foundation for either of the PS6 and next Xbox, hardware insiders have claimed.
According to a new leak from hardware insider and YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, the next-generation AMD SoC codenamed Magnus may be at the heart of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s next console, the PS6. Based on leaked architectural diagrams and corroborating details from multiple AMD sources, this powerhouse chip features a highly bespoke layout that strongly suggests its role as the foundation for the next PlayStation console.
According to the leak, Magnus features a large 264mm² GPU die with a 384-bit memory bus, wider than what’s found in the Xbox Series X. This suggests a focus on high bandwidth, critical for pushing high frame rates and resolutions in graphically intensive games. The chip also contains a unique CPU configuration with three full Zen 6 cores and eight Zen 6C compact cores.
What makes this leak especially compelling is the fact that Magnus is listed under AMD’s Semicustom Business Unit, the same division responsible for console APUs like those housed in the PS4 and PS5. The unusual CPU layout, lack of mobile features, and bespoke 3nm bridge and system dies further support the theory that Magnus is not for laptops or PCs, but a home console. While no documents explicitly mention “Sony” or “PS6”, as is standard for confidentiality, Moore’s Law Is Dead believes that the die shape and design closely resemble previous PlayStation chips overseen by Mark Cerny.
Meanwhile, hardware insider Kepler_L2 took to Twitter/X to comment on Moore’s Law Is Dead’s findings. According to them, the AMD Magnus Zen 6 SoC is likely designed for the next Xbox console, as codenames used by the chip maker for Playstation SoCs are based on Shakespeare characters. They further noted that the chip design in general looks too expensive to be the PS6, since Cerny is a lot more conservative with die size.
