GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has received plenty of criticism from fans because of its uneven visual quality, but does it look bad?
Well, for starters, the game is an improvement in almost every aspect of visuals from the lighting, textures, to the environment. Some aspects are so bad that they negate any of the positives that we can say about the visuals of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
This is the reason why you will see memes and comparisons trending across social media, especially for the character models. Some of them have been downgraded, or they just look awful. Others might have received an upgrade in some aspects but they still look uneven and don’t fit within the current art style.
The textures are bumped to a certain degree and the lighting looks a lot cleaner now. The one thing, that was perhaps the most important one, is the design of the characters. Some of them have been greatly improved, and retouched, while others appear to be simply upscaled and end up looking much worse. They needed to go through each character individually, at least the important ones, but this doesn’t look to be the case.
Remastering these three GTA games is a mammoth task nonetheless, but the way they have been released is nothing short of lack of negligence. They should have been given extra time in development so to iron out any of the flaws. Add to the fact that the PC version remained unplayable for a long time due to the issues with the Rockstar Launcher, and we have a disaster on hand.
Even if there is a big upgrade here, the performance of the game is also questionable. It struggles to hold 30 FPS on PS4 and Xbox One, or 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series. GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition appears to have its issues on the Nintendo Switch, so that’s a bad port as well.
Rockstar Games needs to do a lot of work to resolve some of the issues, and I don’t think it is possible to completely fix the game in its current stage.
