Sony has made the PS4 to PS5 upgrade of Horizon Forbidden West free after facing some backlash regarding the upgrade process.
After announcing pre-orders are open for Horizon Forbidden West, Sony has backtracked from their original statement and shared a new update on the upgrade situation going from the PS4 to the PS5.
According to Sony, HFW is now free to upgrade if you purchase the PS4 version of the game. This means you can technically purchase the game for $59.99 and then get the PS5 version as well, instead of paying $69.99 to snag the PS5 version.
This process has made it seamless for owners of the PS4 to upgrade from their consoles to the current-generation version. However, this doesn’t come without bad news.
SIE President Jim Ryan shared this information in a blog post and confirmed that while the Horizon Forbidden West upgrade is free, the subsequent cross-generation PS4/PS5 games won’t be, and they will need $10 to upgrade from PS4 to the PS5 version.
Some of the upcoming cross-generation games are the God of War sequel, Gran Turismo 7, and potentially more. As it stands now though, there is basically a loophole that keeps the price of this upcoming sequel from Guerilla Games at $59.99, or around the same as last-generation first-party exclusives.
